Dimples are small skin indentations that are innate in some people. A dimple is created when the facial muscles are activated, for example by a smile, and the skin directly over the gap is drawn inwards. The dimples are genetic, which is why several family members often have the same indentations in their cheeks. If a person does not have a dimple, both cheek and chin dimples can be imitated with dimplepalsty (dimple surgery).

Basically, the dimple surgery can be performed under local anesthesia. Before the operation, the patient and the doctor determine the exact location of the dimple. So that the patient does not feel any pain, the surgeon then injects a local anesthetic into the area to be treated. When the cheek is numbed, the surgeon will make a small, circular incision to make a hole in the skin to manually create a dimple. He also removes the fat and muscle in order to shape the dimple. He then positions a special self-dissolving suture from one side of the cheek muscle to the other. The suture is then tied to set the dimple permanently in place. In the following weeks there is scarring between the muscles and the skin on the cheek. After the small cut in the mouth has healed, the dimples can be seen. They are mostly permanent and especially visible when smiling.

The operation takes about 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the desired dimple size and tissue texture. Patients can return to work and daily activities the day after dimpleplasty, with practically no downtime. Usually the cheeks are a little swollen after the treatment. However, this swelling should go down after a few days. In the following days, slight pain and bruising may occur, which can usually be treated with painkillers and antibiotics. To avoid infection, the patient can use antiseptic mouthwashes after meals. It is advisable to refrain from alcohol and cigarettes for the first two to three weeks. Since self-dissolving sutures are used, those sutures do not require removal.
