Gastric Band

Gastric band is a surgical procedure used to treat morbid obesity. It is usually preferred when other weight loss methods have been unsuccessful. An adjustable silicone band is placed laparoscopically around the upper part of the stomach to create a small pouch. The pouch has a small capacity. When it is filled with little food, a rapid feeling of fullness is signaled because the stomach wall expands rapidly. This leads to less food being absorbed.

The width of the band can be individually adjusted after surgery, and the gastric band can be removed at any time. After treatment, normal digestion and nutrient absorption are largely maintained. Weight loss is, on average, less than with other bariatric procedures, approximately 40-60% of excess weight lost in the first two years. A strict diet and exercise plan are essential for success. Overall, gastric band is an option for severely obese individuals who are willing to make permanent lifestyle changes.
