Gastric Balloon

In this procedure, a balloon is inserted into the stomach using an endoscopic instrument. The balloon is then inflated, creating a feeling of fullness in the patient’s stomach. After the gastric balloon procedure, patients feel full faster because pressure on the stomach walls begins sooner. They stay full longer because gastric emptying is slowed and they eat smaller portions overall, thus consuming fewer calories.

In contrast to sleeve gastrectomy, the gastric balloon is defined as a non-surgical procedure. It is a non-surgical procedure, and no incisions are made. There are two main types of gastric balloons, which differ in their placement and duration of incision:

Endoscopic gastric balloon; a so-called sedation is used as anesthesia, and the procedure is painless. The balloon, which is lowered with the aid of a camera and inserted into the stomach using endoscopy, is finally inflated with saline solution and air. The procedure takes approximately 20-30 minutes. Endoscopic balloons typically remain in the stomach for 6 or 12 months. After this time, the balloon must be removed endoscopically.

Swallowable gastric balloon; This balloon is swallowed in the form of a small capsule to which a thin filling tube is attached. Once the capsule is in the stomach, its position is checked via X-ray. The capsule is then filled with water via the tube. The tube is then removed. This procedure does not require endoscopy or anesthesia. The swallowable gastric balloon typically remains in the stomach for about 4 months. After this time, it dissolves on its own and is excreted naturally through the digestive tract. Removal is therefore not necessary.

After a gastric balloon, patients must remember that the gastric balloon is usually a temporary solution. This procedure should be combined with a change in diet and an exercise program, and sometimes with psychological support, to achieve long-term success.
