Gummy Smile
A beautiful smile isn’t solely determined by the shape, color, and position of the teeth. The relationship between teeth, gums, and upper lip also plays a crucial role. When an above-average amount of gum tissue is visible when smiling, it’s referred to as a gummy smile. When smiling, the upper lip lifts due to the interplay of various facial muscles. However, in some people, the cause of the pronounced gum visibility isn’t solely due to the movement of the upper lip. The shape and position of the upper jaw, the size and position of the teeth, the height of the gums, or an excessively pronounced lifting of the upper lip can also contribute. A gummy smile is not inherently a medical condition. However, for some people, the clearly visible gum tissue represents an aesthetic concern. They may perceive their smile as unbalanced or feel self-conscious when laughing.
Depending on the underlying cause, various treatment options are available. After a thorough examination, the cause of the gummy smile can be determined, and the most suitable treatment can be identified. In certain cases, for example, a correction of the gum line (gingivectomy or aesthetic gum correction) may be advisable. In cases of pronounced upper lip lift, other procedures may also be considered, depending on the individual situation. The goal of gummy smile treatment is a harmonious relationship between the gums, teeth, and lips, so that the smile appears more natural and aesthetically balanced.
Periodontitis
Healthy gums and a healthy periodontium are essential for long-term tooth stability. Periodontology deals with the periodontium and its diseases. One of the most common diseases is periodontitis. This is a bacterial inflammation of the periodontium. If left untreated, it can lead to periodontal pockets, bone loss, and, in the long term, even tooth loss. Typical signs can include reddened or swollen gums, bleeding gums, bad breath, or receding gums. The earlier periodontitis is detected, the better its progression can be controlled.
Treatment of Periodontitis
Treatment depends on the severity of the disease. The focus is on removing bacterial plaque and tartar, as well as thoroughly cleaning the tooth and root surfaces, especially in the periodontal pockets. Good daily oral hygiene and regular follow-up care are crucial for maintaining the long-term success of the treatment. In advanced cases, surgical or regenerative procedures may also be necessary.
Maintaining Healthy Gums
Regular checkups and professional teeth cleaning or oral hygiene can help detect and prevent gum disease early. More frequent follow-up appointments may be beneficial for patients at increased risk or with existing periodontal pockets.
