In some cases, teeth are so severely damaged that the dentist must remove them. This hinders the patient’s ability to eat and chew, and also has negative effects on the body. If the gap is too large and can no longer be closed with fixed dentures, such as a bridge or crown, the specialist can use a denture such as a full or partial denture. The dentures can be removed from the mouth and reinserted.

Types of Dentures

Removable dentures can consist of partial or full dentures. A full denture replaces all teeth in the upper or lower jaw and is used to reconstruct the dentition. If several teeth need to be replaced and a fixed bridge is no longer sufficient for optimal care, the dentist will use partial dentures. The stability of these dentures can be increased by using the remaining teeth; for example, partial dentures are attached to the natural teeth with metal clasps. If the denture is mechanically anchored to the permanent teeth, this is referred to as combined dentures.

How are dentures made?

Like bridges and crowns, dentures are manufactured in a dental laboratory. They can be made from various materials, such as metal, acrylic, and acetal. The base of a partial denture is made from metal and is suitable for partial dentures. Acrylic is a flesh-colored base that is attached to the gums and harmonizes in color with your natural teeth.

After treatment

Dentures can feel uncomfortable for the first few weeks. Allow yourself time to get used to your dentures, especially when eating or laughing. Eat slowly to prevent them from slipping. If the dentures do slip, the patient can bite and swallow to correct them.

Risks

Complications cannot be completely ruled out with any treatment. Adjusting and securing dentures is somewhat more difficult, especially in the lower jaw than in the upper jaw. For these reasons, you should choose a specialized dentist who will conduct a thorough oral examination before treatment and only then perform the procedure.
