Gastric Botox is an alternative to gastric balloon, which is also a non-surgical, minimally invasive weight loss procedure. Gastric Botox involves injecting Botox into the stomach muscles. Injecting Botox in to the stomach temporarily paralyzes and relaxes stomach muscles. It slows the movement of the muscles and the rate at which food leaves the stomach. This reduces appetite and food intake, which makes you feel fuller for longer and it can affect the hunger hormone, ghrelin.
Gastric Botox take about 30 minutes, usually under light sedation. It’s an outpatient procedure and patients can typically go home within a few hours. The procedure is carried out endoscopically, a thin flexible tube with a camera and syringe is inserted through the mouth into the stomach, without any incision. It is generally suitable for patients with a BMI Index between 27 -35 who prefer a non-surgical weight loss treatment. It can lead to a weight loss around 5-10% of body weight in 6 months. It is decisive to combine gastric Botox with a healthy diet and regular exercise for optimal and sustainable weight loss.
The effect of Botox typically lasts 4-6 months, and the procedure can be repeated. Gastric Botox is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women or for the patients with certain stomach or muscle conditions.
